Can exercise help with Chronic Pain?

What is Chronic Pain?

Chronic Pain is often defined as any pain lasting more than 12 weeks (3 months). Whereas acute pain is a normal sensation that alerts us to possible injury, chronic pain is very different. Chronic pain persists—often for months or even longer.

Did you know, 1 in 6 New Zealanders will suffer from Chronic Pain...

Most people are unsure whether exercise is safe for their condition and may just exacerbate their pain. You’ll be pleased to know that when prescribed correctly and with the correct focus, exercise can be truly beneficial for improving the quality of your life while living with pain. We’ve seen it happen and we have ample evidence to support the benefits of exercising with a pain condition.

Chronic pain is a persistent pain, and may not respond to standard medical treatment. It can be disabling and frustrating to manage. It can also affect relationships with family, friends and work colleagues. To date, healthcare professionals may have done all that they can to help you and may have used many of the tools available in their toolkit.

However, there are many things that you can do to help ensure that you don’t let the pain beat you, and that you continue to live a healthy and fulfilling life.

If you have persistent pain and are feeling like the disability is preventing you from living a normal life, then an exercise-based pain management programme may be the best thing you can do to help yourself.
